This painting wasn't as difficult to paint as I thought it might be. The 2025 Wolfeboro Regatta was quite fun to paint. The main challenge was to create a composition that was more dynamic than a flat lake and tree line. Lakes are very linear. Dynamic composition keeps your eyes moving around the painting. I could capitalize on the movement of the water under strong, nearly overhead sunlight on the ripples. I painted in some of the background details in the sailboat and the lake house on the far right. Because it was so calm, the boats created the most interest which are, as a grouping, intended to be the main focus.
It is on show at The Art Place Gallery in Wolfeboro, so if you're in the area, do stop by and see it and many other beautiful paintings by talented area artists. This 36" long work is oil on panel and framed in a sophisticated dark wood frame.
What's on my easel now? I am fortunate to be working on a commission of an intriguing wooded canyon in Greece. It is a little escape from bitter winter.
